Now granted, both writing styles are very different, but I just thought it felt similar. It wasn't so similar that it was annoying or copying, but I just felt like there was a lot of parallels between those books and this one.

I found it was very similar to Marie Lu's The Young Elites, with the group of characters, as well as their rocky relationship and 'magical' skill set as well as having a hint of A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Now for some this may be a problem, but for me it was just a little speed bump.
